There Are No Limits, Only Fear

"What stops people from doing certain things is not limits, it is fear... The worst things have been done, or not done, by people or groups of people who fear. The greatest things that have ever been done were by those who did not limit themselves."

By Andrew Wayne Post

The other night, I was lying in bed with a girl I recently started dating. There is a ton of chemistry. The conversation never ends, the physical intimacy is top notch, and both of us are very present during our interactions.

At this point, we were still getting to know and understand each other. I do not need to know or understand a person in order to embrace them fully. I have no reservations or apprehensions when it comes to intimacy. If it is there, it is there. Unfortunately, not everyone shares my take on life, especially not a lot of the women I date.

In her quest to get to know me, the following conversation unfolded, and it got my creative juices flowing.

Her: “You scare me.”
Me: “Why?”
Her: “Because you do not seem to have any limits.”
Me: “No, I do not, but why does that scare you?”
Her: “What is stopping you from doing whatever it is you want to do?”
Me: “Nothing, I will do whatever it is I choose to do. But that has nothing to do with my lack of limits. What stops people from doing certain things is not limits, it is fear, which I also do not possess. The worst things have been done, or not done, by people or groups of people who fear. The greatest things that have ever been done were by those who did not limit themselves.

Limits only get in the way of growth. Fear gets in the way of everything.”

Her concern, at least in her mind, was legitimate. A person with no limits is hypothetically capable of doing terrible things. But in the real world, hypotheticals do not exist.

“Limits only get in the way of growth.”

The reality is this, people with no limits provide themselves the opportunity to actually live, instead of just exist as some people do. When a person is living, they are learning. As they learn, they develop an understanding of their part in the world as it relates to everyone else. Therefore, whatever it is they wish to do will often not infringe on the livelihoods of others.

This is quite the opposite of people who live ruled by their fears. They do not expose themselves to life, and it results in them significantly limiting their growth. This lack of growth leads to a lack of understanding. They may not do whatever it is they wish to do, but they may feel the need to make decisions they do not want to make as a result of that fear. Because they do not have the understanding of their actions as it pertains to everything, these fear-based decisions can cause harm to others. This is where the girl’s concern stemmed from.

In her mind, I was capable of doing anything, some of which may cause her harm. But this is not possible, because I know the effects of my decisions because of the depth of understanding I possess. An understanding only available to me because I choose to live with no limits.
