Poet Robert Frost said, “Happiness makes up in height, what it lacks in length.” This weekend is International Misery Happiness day. I’m not sure how these things work, like is there some international coalition of nations determine assigned days? However; it is enriching to consider what happiness means to you…

Another Thought Cow contributor placed his rumination on the subject in this article and the interpretation of it globally was introduced. Because, happiness to us an abstraction: we in Western countries have the luxury to debate its meaning and assign it variables. In some places, the subject as an abstraction or variable simply doesn’t exist; happiness is clothes on your back, food on your plate and health. Happiness and life is intangible.

In my interactions with immigrants or visitors from economically poor countries without abundancies of luxury there is a huge difference in the syntax and communication of the idea. I recall listening to a conversation where one of my American friends was complaining to another friend from out-of-the-country about depression and too much time on his hands. My other friend is from a central Asian country where the currency exchange of one dollar is something like $3,000 of their monetary units and needless to say, life difficult, and watching the exchange was priceless. The expression on her face was as though he was attempting to explain something that didn’t exist and could not be seen… like he was complain of having an eye in the back of his head or 5 limbs.

That too does not last. Psychological studies prove a major amount of American immigrants leave harsh lives and poverty, risking life and limb, to arrive in paradise and report depression, anxiety and our neuroses. In 5 to 10 years my friend too will be complaining of what to do with her brains sways and time. Depression and pharmaceutical abuse has been high for decades. What is worse is there is a staggering increase in mass murders and school shootings from deeply disturbed, unhappy and isolated individuals. It is odd because there are places in the world where almost everyone understands going days without eating and being suffering illness without medicine but something like an individual shooting up people in public, for no apparent reason, is unheard of.

Happiness is a double-edge sword because it is an abstraction. We can give ourselves luxuries, ecstasy and emotions on a higher level than any animal. Yet when we have everything we need physically is when the battle begins…the battle for the soul or what to do with time. I think what we need is more craziness. Don’t let things build inside you, let them out. Be ridiculous, be silly, be angry but be done with it: don’t hold onto it. It’s better to tell someone to f$%^ off and walk away relieved than to keep quiet and let that feeling rot inside and turn into something worse. It’s better to try for that unreasonable, out-of-your-league chance with love than living with, “Why didn’t I?”

So, for this upcoming and internationally certified, official day, focus on the height, the pinnacle of happiness and let it overwhelm you till you have to share it. That’s an order! ; ]
